The unique terroir where the Stoneleigh Vineyards lie defines the wine’s independent qualities. Located on the northern side of the Wairau Valley, in close proximity to Marlborough’s main river, the Wairau, the vignerons have located the vineyards on shallow rock and gravel-exposed soils. These soils, low in nutrient and water-holding capacity, coupled with the terroir’s warmer climate and high rainfall add up to produce a wine with its own unique sense of ‘place’.
Stoneleigh Vineyard is situated in the heart of the Rapaura area on the northern side of the Wairau valley in Marlborough, New Zealand. Within 2km of the Wairau River and the Richmond Ranges, our home lies within an area known locally as the ‘Golden Mile’ of vineyards. As evidence of an ancient riverbed, Stoneleigh takes its name from the stones that cover our vineyard – land that’s now home to some of the oldest grafted Sauvignon Blanc blocks in Marlborough. The stones store and reflect the sun’s heat up into the vines, enhancing the ripening process and contributing to the unique taste of Stoneleigh wines.
What was once an ancient stony riverbed has, overtime, become much more. The distinctive stone-studded Rapaura soils of our vineyards create a wine style that is fresh, crisp and vibrant – the flavour of Stoneleigh. For thousands of years, the Wairau River ran through what are now our vineyards, depositing stones of all sizes. Today our Stoneleigh vines are planted among these stones, which we call sunstones. These sunstones capture heat throughout the day and release it on to the vines to help develop rich, intense flavours in our grapes.
Food Pairing: Serve lightly chilled on its own or with delicate white meat or seafood dishes.
